Summer days are the perfect time for kids and teens to explore, play, and create lasting memories.  The constant flood of activities during the school year make it tough on families to bond outside of just hanging around the house.  We want to tell you that there are plenty of fun and affordable activities to keep the young ones entertained, some of which are even free. From outdoor sports to scenic trails, here are the top five inexpensive or free summer day activities that kids and teens in Gadsden will love.

1. Disc Golf at Vivian Lee Maddox Sports Complex

Disc golf is a fantastic way to spend a summer day, and Vivian Lee Maddox Park offers a great course for both beginners and seasoned players. This activity is not only free but also promotes physical fitness and outdoor fun with only needing to grab a disc or frisbee first. Best of all, it’s mostly in the shade!  With 18 targets winding through the park's shaded greenery, kids and teens can enjoy friendly competition while honing their throwing skills. Grab some discs, head to the park, and let the games begin!

2. Mini-Golf at the Falls

Located near the beautiful Noccalula Falls Park, many people don’t know that there is a mini-golf course there that offers a fun and affordable experience that’s perfect for kids and teens. The course features several obstacles and vibrant greens, making it a delightful outing for the whole family. While there is a small fee to play, it’s an inexpensive way to enjoy a sunny day and take in the scenic views of the falls. Plus, after a round of mini-golf, you can explore the surrounding park and its attractions.

3. Walking Trail at James D Martin Wildlife Park

For nature-loving kids and teens, the walking trail at James D Martin Wildlife Park is a must-visit and conveniently located behind the Gadsden Mall. This serene gravel lined trail winds through wetlands and offers stunning views of diverse wildlife, including birds, turtles, and fish. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely walk, a family picnic, or even a bit of birdwatching. The trail is free to use and provides a great opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors while staying active while also being one of the best places in town to catch a sunset.

4. Cornhole at The Alley

Cornhole is a classic game that’s easy to learn and fun for all ages. The Alley inside The Gadsden Mall is a lively spot where kids and teens can bowl, play in the arcade, or enjoy a game of cornhole with friends or family. The corn hole equipment is free and only requires a valid driver’s license, making it a great inexpensive place to hang out during the summer.  When you’re done, there is also a snack bar and beverages available for all ages.  The best part is that all this is in air-conditioned comfort!

5. Inner Tubing at Big Wills Creek Campground and Tubing

For those looking to cool off on a hot summer day, inner tubing at Big Wills Creek Campground and Tubing is an exciting and refreshing option. Float down the gentle waters of Big Wills Creek and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. This activity is both fun and affordable, with a small fee for tube rentals. It’s a great way for kids and teens to spend a lazy summer day relaxing on the water and making a splash.  Reservations are required for this, so make sure to contact them first for an open slot before heading out there!
